VMware provides cloud computing and virtualization technology including desktop software that runs on Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS.

The VMware Academic Software Licensing Program supports the use of virtualization applications in teaching and research. The program provides both desktop and infrastructure software for personal use, whether as part of STEM classes, in research projects, or for gaining hands-on experience with VMware products. Applications are provided at no cost to end users through an annual subscription fee.

There are two distinct licenses for VMware products. Please read both options below and refer to the VMware Academic Software Licensing Overview website for complete details.

Instruction/Noncommercial Research (Free for Educational Use)
The single-use licenses provided through the VMware Academic Software Licensing Program may be used for instruction and noncommercial research only.

Administration/Commercial Research (Commercial Pricing Applies)
Staff are generally NOT eligible for the free academic license and must purchase commercial licenses for VMware products. Infrastructure use is defined as the use of software as a part of the organization's infrastructure that is not intended to be used primarily for instructional or research use.
